The Kampaheswarar Temple or kampa-hara-ishvarar ( kampa-hareswarar ) is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. It is situated in Thirubuvanam, a village in Thanjavur district in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu, on the Mayiladuthurai-Kumbakonam road. Shiva is worshiped as “Kampahareswarar” as he removed the quaking (Skt. Kampa) of a king who was being haunted by a Brahmarakshasa. It was built by Kulothunga Chola III and is considered the last of the four masterpieces built during the Medieval Chola era.

The temple has a shrine for Sharabha, a depiction of Shiva, a part-lion and part-bird beast in Hindu mythology, who, according to Sanskrit literature, is eight-legged and more powerful than a lion or an elephant, possessing the ability to clear a valley in one jump. The temple is considered in the line of Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and Airavatesvara temple, with the trio forming the Great Living Chola Temples.

As per Hindu Mythology, Lord Sarabeswara is the unique form of Lord Shiva and is known to be the combination of a bird and Lion with 8 legs, 4 hands, 2 wings, sharp tooth and nails which makes Him look ferocious.

It is said that Lord Shiva took the form of Lord Sarabeswarar to bring down the anger and ferociousness of Lord Narasimha. Lord Narasimha killed the demon Hiranyakashipu and even after completing His mission, His anger did not subside. Lord Narasimha’s ferocity continued relentlessly, and even the Gods began fearing his fury. Ultimately, they pleaded with Lord Shiva to handle the difficult situation. Lord Shiva first tried to calm down the Vishnu Avatar through his own terrifying form Veerabhadra. But it was of no use. Then Lord Shiva himself took the aggressive form of Sarabha, the beast, which appeared to be a deadly mix of a lion, a bird, and a human, which ultimately brought down the ferociousness of Lord Narasimha.

Lord Sarabeshwara is the ruthless vanquisher of evil and a great protector. He bestows the devotees with fearlessness and the strength to face the battles of life.

People who are about to undergo any surgery are advised to worship Lord Sarabeswarar, especially on Sundays during the Rahu Kalam (4.30 PM – 6 PM). Chanting Sarabeswara Mantra for 21 Times would remove all the fear and the anxiety from the minds of the people. It is strongly believed that Lord Sarabeswarar removes all the negative forces and ensures the speedy recovery for the people who worship Him with utmost devotion.

Lord Sarabeswara can be worshipped in many temples. But the Kampaheswarar temple at Thirubhuvanam, near Kumbakonam, is one of the most famous temples for worshipping Lord Sarbeshwarar.

திருபுவனம் (Thirubuvanam), இந்தியாவின் தமிழ்நாடு மாநிலத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டத்தில், திருவிடைமருதூர் வட்டத்தில் இருக்கும் முதல்நிலை பேரூராட்சி ஆகும்.

இங்கு கம்பகரேஸ்வரர்க்கு ஆலயம் அமைந்துள்ளது. உலகிலேயே இங்கு தான் சரபமூர்த்திக்கு(கம்பகரேஸ்வரர்க்கு) பிரேத்தியகமான ஆலயம் உள்ளது. சோழர் காலக் கட்டிடக்கலைக்கு உதாரணமாக இவ்வாலயத்தையும்,தஞ்சை பிரகதீஸ்வரர் ஆலயத்தையும், தாராசுரம் ஐராவதீஸ்வரர் ஆலயத்தையும், கங்கை கொண்ட சோழபுரம் ஆலயத்தையுமே குறிப்பிடுகிறார்கள்.

சரபேசுவரர், அறுபத்து நான்கு சிவ உருவத்திருமேனிகளில் ஒன்றாக சைவர்களால் வணங்கப்படும் வடிவமாகும்.

உத்திர காமிகாகமம் இந்த வடிவத்தினை ஆகாச பைரவர் என்று கூறுகிறது.[1] தத்வநிதி சிற்பநூல் இவ்வடிவத்திற்கு 32 கைகள் இருப்பதாக கூறுகிறது. இக்கால்களில் ஒன்று துர்க்கையமம்னை அனைத்தவாறு இருக்கும். இந்த வடிவத்தின் சக்தி தேவி அரிப்ரணாசினி.

வியாசர் இந்த மூர்த்தியை பரிகாரமற்ற துன்பத்திற்கும், நோய்களுக்கும், விஷபயம் மற்றும் பூத பிரேத உபாதைகள் ஆகியவற்றுக்கு வணங்கலாம் என்று கூறுகிறார்.
