Greatness Of Temple:

Among the weapons held by Lord Muruga in His 12 hand, Vel enjoys the leadership status. Also, this is the only weapon being worshipped with all devotion as to Lord Himself. This worship continues in Tamilnadu since early days. Vel is praised with many adjectives as Vettrivel, Veeravel, Vairavel, Shaktivel, Koorvel, Gnanavel as mentioned in many hymns. This is also a symbol which many wear in their necks. People chant the names of Vel. This is a temple for Vel that has in itself many devotional aspects.

Temple History:

The glory of Vel is elaborately sung by Saint Arunagiriar in his celebrated Kandar Alankaram. When one is left in the lurch by all relatives and his/her possessions, the one constant companion protecting the soul is Vel, emphasizes the saint. Vel is the symbol of wisdom and the worshipper is gifted with vast knowledge of philosophies. It is noteworthy that other divine poet, philosopher and enlightened soul Sri Kumara Gurupara Swamigal achieved speech skill at the age of five with the blessings of Lord Muruga of Tiruchendur. The great devotional Tiruchendur Kandar Kalivenba was born that contains the whole substance of Skanda Mahapuranam.

It would be relevant to recall the lines of Subranya Bhjangam of Acharya Sri Adi Sankara that no evil would dare come close to a Vel devotee.
